Dorothea Lange, the great Depression-era photographer, had a powerful shooting ethos: Hands off, sense of time, sense of place. That philosophy could be considered a fairly succinct starting point for documentary photographers (the fine arts version of a photojournalist). It also flies in the face of many in contemporary photography who feel the compulsion to have their hands influence all aspects of the work -- from image capture and on to extensive image manipulation...To try and present a message they are unable develop through the camera itself.
